Tanzania Hockey Women and Men team ready to go to Nairobi to play the World League Round 1!

Lunedi si parte! Direzione? Nairobi! A fare che? A giocare il torneo di qualificazione per i mondiali di hockey su prato!! Quest’anno la Tanzania sarà presente, per la prima volta nella storia con la squadra femminile e quella maschile, al World League Round 1, torneo valido come primo gradino per la qualificazione ai mondiali del 2018, ma anche valido per passare al prossimo turno della selezione per le Olimpiadi di Rio de Janerio! Ieri, giovedi 28 settembre 2014, si è svolta presso la sala stampa del National Sport Council a Dar es Salaam la cerimonia di consegna della bandiera che verrà portata in rappresentanza dalle due nazionali a Nairobi. Tra le altre bandiere del Ghana, Kenya ed Egitto, le squadre partecipanti al torneo, sventolerà anche la bandiera della Tanzania.

Per la squadra femminile, quest’anno ci sono tante novità rispetto all’anno scorso. Prima di tutto, ci sono tanti volti nuovi in squadra. Il lavoro iniziato 4 mesi fa di attirare verso l’hockey ragazze giovani, attorno ai 20 anni, ha portato alla creazione di un gruppo di 17 giocatrici che oggi sono state selezionate per andare a rappresentare il loro paese in un torneo di altissimo livello. Pochi mesi fa, non sapevano nemmeno che esistesse questo sport. Si sono avvicinate per caso, qualcuna ha visto che nel campetto vicino a casa sua si giocava a questo strano sport, lo hanno osservato da fuori all’inizio, incuriosite e intimorite dai bastoni; altre sono state portate dalle loro amiche che già avevano iniziato a giocare. Tutte le mattine, alle 6, appuntamento fisso al campo, e piano piano il numero delle ragazze è aumentato. Siamo partiti con 3-4 giocatrici, adesso il gruppo è composto da più o meno una ventina di giocatrici, tutte provenienti dalla stessa zona di Dar, MAgereza. Delle ragazze della squadra dell’anno scorso, chi per problemi di famiglia o per impossibilità di conciliare hockey con il ruolo di mamma e moglie, molte hanno abbandonato. Solamente Kidawa, Ashbae e Mery sono rimaste a dare manforte al gruppetto delle giovani.

L’altra grande novità, è che quest’anno siamo riusciti a trovare tre sponsors locali che ci hanno aiutato, almeno in parte , a coprire le spese della trasferta di Nairobi. Un grazie quindi grandissimo agli sponsors 2014 della Nazionale Femminile di Hockey della Tanzania: TECHNOBRAIN, DIAMOND MOTORS E JUBILEE INSURANCE, che hanno creduto nel nostro sogno e ci hanno dimostrato il loro sostegno. A loro dico anche “pole” per tutte le volte che sono piombata nel loro ufficio per chiedere sostegno alla nostra squadra…però ne è valsa la pena! Tuttavia, concludo dicendo che a fianco di questi nomi di aziende, c’è una fila lunghissima di persone, AMICI, che ci sostengono continuamente con donazioni private e ci mandano materiale sportivo da tutto il mondo. Elencarli tutti non posso, perché la lista è veramente tanto lunga che correrei il rischio di dimenticarmi qualcuno. Ma, senza di loro, non saremmo arrivati fino a qui e non potremmo sognare di andare avanti e raggiungere nuovi risultati.

Depature on Monday! Headed to? Nairobi! For what? To play the world cup hockey qualification tournament!! This year Tanzania will be present for the first time in its history with both male and women teams at the World League Round 1, the tournament that will assign one spot to the next stage of world cup 2018 qualifications, and is also valid as a qualifier stage for the next Olimpic games in Rio de Janeiro! Yesterday, on August the 28^th, by the press room of the National Sport Council in Dar es Salaam, took place the ceremony in which the teams received the national flag to be carried in Nairobi. Among other flags of Ghana, Kenya and Egypt, the other participating teams, also the Tanzanian one will be waving.

For the women team, there are a lot of novelties this year. First of all a lot of new faces, as the job started 4 months ago of recruiting young girls in their early twenties brought to the creation of this group of 17 players, that have now been selected to represent their country in a high competitive tournament. Just a few months ago they didn’t even knew about the existence of this sport. They just gave it a chance, at the beginning some of them noticed us playing by the pitch near their homes, they just stood there staring with curiosity, and intimidated by the sticks; others were brought by their friends who already started playing. Every morning at six, meeting point by the pitch, and little by little the number of girls grew. From 3-4 players to the current group of around 20, all from the same area oof the city, Magereza. From last year’s team, the majority had to quit for family and personal reasons and the impossibility to conciliate hockey with their role as mothers and wives; only Kidawa, Ashbae and Mary are still in, to support the younger players.

The other big novelty is that this year we managed to find 3 local sponsors that partially helped us covering the expenses for this Nairobi trip. A big thanks to the sponsors of Tanzanian women national hockey team: TECHNOBRAIN, DIAMOND MOTORS E JUBILEE INSURANCE, that believed in our dream and showed their support. So, “pole” for all the times I dropped by your offices to bother you for some support, but it was worth it!

Anyway, along this companies, there’s a big number of people, FRIENDS, that constantly support us from all over the world with donations and equipment. It’s a very long list of people, too long to not forget someone; but without them we could have not make it this far, dreaming to reach more goals.

New faces of hockey in Tanzania – Tanga Tournament 2014

I NUOVI VOLTI DELL’HOCKEY IN TANZANIA. DEBUTTO DEI RAGAZZI DELLA SQUADRA MASCHILE DELL’UNIVERSITA’ DI DAR ES SALAAM E DELLE NUOVE RAGAZZE DELLA NAZIONALE FEMMINILE AL TORNEO “PHOENIX ASSURANCE” DI TANGA.

Come ogni anno, hockeysti dalla Tanzania e da paesi limitrofi come il Kenya e l’Uganda, si ritrovano per il prestigioso torneo internazionale “Phoenix Assurance” a Tanga, cittadina a circa 6 ore dalla capitale Dar Es Salaam, che si affaccia sull’Oceano Indiano. Quest’anno il torneo si è svolto dall’8 al 10 agosto 2014, con 8 squadre maschili partecipanti provenienti dalla Tanzania, Kenya e Uganda. In più, il gentil sesso è stato rappresentato dalla nazionale tanzaniana femminile, alla sua seconda edizione. Il torneo è stato vinto dal Moshi Khalsa, che in finale ha battuto il Kenya Police ai rigori.

Fino qui, tutto normale. Ciò che si “nasconde” dietro un risultato, però, non si vede.
Per la prima volta nella storia dell’hockey in Tanzania, ha partecipato a questo importante torneo la squadra maschile dell’Università di Dar Es Salaam, che è stata fondata poco più di un paio di mesi fa, quando abbiamo iniziato a insegnare hockey agli studenti e studentesse universitari. A fine torneo, i ragazzi si sono classificati ottavi, le partite ufficiali le hanno perse tutte e due (con il Moshi Khalsa 9-0 e contro l’Eh-Hilal 1-0). Il risultato non dice che i ragazzi della squadra dell’università sono un gruppo di giovani studenti che hanno scoperto una grande passione per l’hockey e che hanno fortemente voluto partecipare a questo torneo, pur non avendo le risorse economiche per farlo. Cercando, insieme, un aiuto economico, abbiamo ricevuto il grande supporto della più grande azienda di Cemento qui in Tanzania, la TWIGA CEMENT, che ha deciso di cogliere la sfida di essere promotrice dello sport tra i giovani tanzaniani. Grazie al loro supporto economico, la squadra dell’Università è riuscita a organizzare la trasferta per il torneo, dimostrando alla Federazione Tanzaniana e più in generale a tutto il movimento sportivo in Tanzania, una grande sensibilità verso i valori che lo sport trasmette ai giovani. Un sincero ASANTE TWINGA CEMENT! E un grazie anche a Simon e Stephanie per aver reso il tutto possibile.

Ma passiamo al gentil sesso. Se guardiamo i risultati, la formazione della Nazionale Femminile Tanzaniana, ha perso entrambe le due partite ufficiali del torneo, la prima contro il il TPDF di Dar es Salaam (7-0) e la seconda contro la squadra del Kenya Police (12-0). Il risultato però non dice che, per prima cosa, giocare contro i maschi è sempre difficilissimo, la disparità di livello è troppo grande da poter permettere un confronto alla pari. Purtroppo l’idea iniziale di organizzare un torneo femminile quest’anno, non è andata in porto sebbene l’invito a squadre femminili di altri paesi lo abbiamo mandato. Nessuna squadra femminile è riuscita a trovare i fondi per venire a Tanga. A parte questo, i risultati non dicono che quest’anno la squadra femminile è composta per la stragrande maggioranza da ragazze giovani dai 18 ai 22 anni che si sono avvicinate all’hockey pochi mesi fa, quando hanno scoperto che questo “strano” sport si giocava nel campetto vicino casa (nel quartiere di Magereza). Della squadra dell’anno scorso, sono rimaste solamente tre giocatrici (Ashbae, Mery e Kidawa), che supportano le più giovani con la loro esperienza. A Tanga  le ragazze erano in 18, da questo gruppo sceglieremo le 16 giocatrici che rappresenteranno la Tanzania al World League Round 1 dal 5 al 7 settembre 2014 a Nairobi. La squadra è giovane ed inesperta, il torneo sarà durissimo perché ci andremo a confrontare con squadre molto forti come il Ghana e il Kenya. Ma la Tanzania ci sarà e faremo del nostro meglio per giocare al massimo delle nostre possibilità.

Il bilancio della trasferta a Tanga, quindi, è più che positivo per l’hockey in Tanzania, se mettiamo assieme i giovani giocatori della squadra maschile dell’Università e della squadra femminile, possiamo contare circa 40 nuovi giocatori per la Tanzania da aprile 2014 fino ad oggi … un risultato che vale più dei risultati sul campo e da la spinta per andare avanti con questo progetto-sogno di diffondere l’hockey tra i giovani tanzaniani.

Chiudiamo ringraziando uno degli ultimi acquisti nella famiglia dell’hockey in Tanzania. Il suo colore della pelle è come il mio, ma viene dall’Australia. Si chiama Kimberley Height, ed è una ragazza che sta lavorando per un’ong locale qui a Dar es Salaam. Essendo giocatrice amatoriale di hockey, quando ha saputo che qui a Dar c’era la squadra di hockey, si è unita a noi in un paio di allenamenti ed è anche venuta a giocare con noi a Tanga. Karibu sana Kimberley! E un grazie di cuore anche alla zia di Kimberley, Raelene Trimper che ha deciso di supportare il progetto hockey in Tanzania, ASANTE SANA RAELENE!

E grazie anche a molti altri sostenitori del progetto, che per fortuna sono molti, vicini e lontani. NEW FACES OF HOCKEY IN TANZANIA. DAR ES SALAAM UNIVERSITY MALE TEAM AND NEW WOMEN NATIONAL TEAM DEBUT AT “PHOENIX ASSURANCE TOURNAMENT IN TANGA.

Like every year, hockey players from Tanzania and neighbouring countries like Kenya and Uganda, meet in the prestigious international tournament “Phoenix Assurance” in Tanga, a small ocean side town that at about 6 hours from the capital. this year the tournament run from the 8th to the 10th of August, with 8 male teams from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, plus a lady’s team to represent the women national squad, taking part for the second timen in the event. Mochi Khalsa took home the trophy, defeating Kenya POlice’s team on penalties.

So far, nothing new. But there was something more beyond the final score and standings. for the first time in history of hockey in Tanzania, the University of Dar es Salaam Team took the field in the tournament, a team founded about three months agoo, when we started to teach hockey to university students on their campus. At the end they played and lost two matches (9-0 to upcoming champions Moshi Khalsa and 1-0 against the Eh-Hilal Team). what you don’t find in the scoreboard is that they are a young group of students that fell in love with hockey and craved to participate in this tournament, even though not having the resources to partecipate. looking together for some financial support we managed to get some funds from the biggest cement company here in Tanzania, the Twiga Cement, that decided to step up for the challenge and support the development of this sport among young Tanzanians. Thansk also to them the university team managed to organize the trip to the tournament, showing the tanzania federation and the whole sport movement in Tanzania, all the passion and values that this sport can instill into youngsters. A sincere ASANTE TWIGA CEMENT! and a thanks also to Simon and Stephanie to make this happen.

Time for the ladies now; looking at the scoreboard we also lost both official matches played here, the first one 7-0 with TPDF (Tanzania People’s Defence Forces) and the second one 12-0 against Kenya Police’s team; playing against boys team is too much of a challange, the sheer phisical difference alone poses a gap to big to make up for a close match. Initially we would have wanted some women team from nighbouring countries to take part to the tournament, we send out some invitation, but the lack of financial support didn’t allowed this idea to materialize. Furthermore this year’s team is made up for the majority from rookies, girls of around 18 to 22 years of age that started playing hockey some months ago, when they find out this “strange game” being played on the ground near home ( in Magereza neighbourhood). from last year team only 3 players remain (Ashbae, Mery e Kidawa) to support the newcomers with their experience. In Tanga they were 18, from this group we’ll pick up the 16 to represent Tanzania at the World League Round 1 Tournament, from the 5th to the 7th of September in Nairobi. the team is young and inexperienced, and the tournament will be reeally though, as we will be lining up agains much more eperienced team like Ghana and Kenya. But we’ll be there to represent Tanzania, and to leave everything on the field.

The overall balance from this tournament in Tanga is positive for hockey in Tanzania, summing up all the new players gathered in the last months for the University and women squads, more than 40 senior players from april, a result more important then the scoreboard now, to fuel the growth of this project/dream to spread hockey among youngs in Tanzania.

A final note to welcome another newcomer in the ever-growing tanzanian hockey family: she’s light skinned like me, but she comes from Australia; her name is Kimberley Height and she works for a local NGO here in Dar es Salaam. Being an amateur hockey player herself, when she found out that we had a hockey team in Dar, she joined us for some practices and came with us to play in Tanga. Karibu sana Kimberley! And a big, whole-hearted THANK YOU also to her aunt, Raelene Trimper, that decided to give an important support to this hockey project in Tanzania, Asante sana Raelene!

And thanks also to all the other project supporters, near and far away: the local Tanzanian Hockey Federation, COPE and Tulime Onlus (project promoters), local sponsors and all our friends that support us with their donations and with much needed with hockey equipment. New children playing Hockey!

Attenzione attenzione: l’hockey sta entrando nelle scuole tanzaniane!
Finite le ore di lezione, che si fa? Tutti a giocare a hockey! ..Ukonga Primary School, Jica Primary School e Juhudi Primary School sono le tre scuole primarie governative che hanno deciso di introdurre hockey come attività ludica/sportiva per i loro studenti. Il 31 luglio 2014 ha avuto inizio la prima lezione per i ragazzini della scuola di Ukonga, l’adesione è stata alta, circa 30 tra bambini e bambine di età fra i 9 egli 11 anni hanno impugnato per la prima volta un bastone da hockey! E..si son divertiti!

I loro maestri, chi saranno? un piccolo gruppo di giocatori della squadra di Magereza e di giocatrici della squadra nazionale, con cui abbiamo iniziato il corso di allenatori. L’obiettivo è quello di formare atleti e atlete locali che poi possano diventare loro gli allenatori di domani per la Tanzania! Un piccolo rimborso spese spetta ad ognuno delle giocatrici, che non hanno un lavoro, in modo da far si che l’attività di insegnamento dell’hockey nelle scuole le possa aiutare, almeno un pochino, a sostenere le loro famiglie.

Un grazie speciale agli amici della scuola di Grantorto, che ci hanno donato i bastoni di plastica e un po’ di palline con cui abbiamo iniziato questa attività! Inoltre i primi prototipi di bastoni in legno costruiti in Tanzania sono stati utilizzati dai bambini… per adesso hanno tenuto! Un altro piccolo passo avanti verso lo sviluppo e la sostenibilità dell’hockey in Tanzania. “Pole pole”… piano piano! 🙂
Come sempre, il progetto ha bisogno di continuo sostegno, in termini economici, di materiale etc… aiutateci a portare avanti questo sogno!

ENGLISH VERSION – Attention please: hockey is coming in Tanzanian schools!

So what to do after school hours? ..Let’s play hockey! Ukonga Primary School, Jica Primary School and Juhudi Primary School are the three public school that decided to introduce hockey as recreational/sport activity for their students. On 31st of July hockey lessons started for kids of Ukonga School: good attendance and participation, around 30 between boys and girls from 9 to 11 years of age for the first time held a hockey stick in their hands! And.. they had a whole lot of fun!

Who will coach them? A small group of players from Magereza team and women from the national team, with whom we started a hockey coaching course. The objective is to create new coaches out of current local players, to build a solid platform for future hockey development in Tanzania! They are unemployed and get some pocket money from coaching, so that hockey can also help out a little bit to make their ends meet.

A special thanks to our friends from the school of Grantorto, who donated the plastic stick and some balls to start out this activity! Furthermore the first locally made wooden hockey sticks have been used and they made their job so far! Another small step toward hockey sustainability here in Tanzania. “Pole pole”.. little by little! 🙂
