HOCKEY & SCHOOLS…FROM TANZANIA TO ITALY!

Durante lo scorso febbraio, ho avuto il piacere di incontrare i ragazzi e le ragazze di due scuole vicino a Torino. Grazie al contatto stabilito da alcuni amici di Tulime con queste scuole e alla sensibilità dei professori, sono stata invitata a parlare dell’esperienza della squadra di hockey femminile in Tanzania, la nostra avventura a Nairobi, le sfide che abbiamo affrontato. Si è parlato di cosa vuol dire vivere in un paese diverso, e che cosa vuol dire praticare uno sport avendo a disposizione pochi mezzi. Dopo la “lezione”, i ragazzi poi si sono sperimentati a giocare a hockey, una versione un pò diversa da quella classica, senza il prato e con delle mazze da hockey su ghiaccio, però pur sempre divertente e stimolante! 🙂

Ringrazio tutti i ragazzi e i loro professori per aver scelto di sostenere il progetto hockey in Tanzania con una raccolta fondi di 220 euro, fatta all’interno delle scuole! Il ricavato, va a sostenere le attività di allenamento e di diffusione dell’hockey nelle scuole e tra i giovani in Tanzania.

Last February while I was in Italy, I had the pleasure to meet the students from two high schools nearby Turin, just under the Alps. Thanks to the connection created by some teachers friends of Tulime Onlus, I have been invited to talk about the women hockey team in Tanzania, our story, what we have done and the challanges we have to face to build up the team and what does it mean for young girls to have the possibility to play in the Tanzania National Team. The students then try themselves to play hockey during the PE lesson, enjoying a lot!

I want to say a big thank you to all the guys and the teachers of these schools for the support they gave us with a small fund rainsing activity, that for us has a big value for the meaning! In total we received from them a contrivution of 220 euro. The proceed will go to support the hockey activities in schools and among young people in Tanzania.

Mapinduzi Cup… First matches for Tanzania Hockey Ladies in 2014…

Quando inizia la stagione delle pioggie, tutti i piani vengono sconvolti dalla valanga di acqua che scende nel giro di poche ore. A parte le strade bloccate, code immense e traffico che raggiunge un livello ancora un livello più allucinante di quello che credevi fosse il massimo possibile… la pioggia quest’anno ha anche causato il posticipo del campionato di hockey in Tanzania, il Mapinduzi Cup, in programma dal 28 al 30 di marzo a Dar.

When the rain season starts, you never know what is going to happen and all your plans can suddenly change… Besides the problem that all the streets are completley blocked because of the water and the traffic jam reaches in few hours such a level of mess that you could never imagine it could be possible to reach…. well the rain this year has caused also problems to hockey players.In fact the Mapinduzi Cup (the tanzanian hockey championship), that was scheduled from the 28th to the 30th of March, has been postponed because of the rain.

Ora, chiaramente quel giorno non si è potuto giocare, e le partite sono state rinvitate al giorno dopo, sabato 29 marzo. Quest’anno, grande novità è stata la partecipazione della squadra femminile al campionato. L’hanno scorso, in questo periodo, stava iniziando il tutto, allo stesso torneo parteciparono solo squadre maschili. Quest’anno anche noi donne, con la nostra squadra TWENDE, abbiamo partecipato!

Now, obviously that day we couldn’t play and all the matches has been postponed to the next day, saturday 29. This year, at the tournament there has been a great news, the women team participation. Last year, at the same tournament that wa played in April 2013, no women team was there, now after one year of work, here we are with our women team TWENDE!

Rispetto alla squadra dell’anno scorso, ci sono 6 giocatrici nuove: Zuena, Nuru, Flora, Pendo, Beby e Betty, tutte provenienti da Magereza, un quartiere a Sud Di Dar, vicino alle prigioni, dove utilimamente stiamo facendo gli allenamenti, coinvolgendo sempre di più giovani ragazze della zona. Ieri hanno fatto il loro debutto in campo, giocando per la prima volta una partita! La prima partita l’abbiamo giocata contro la squadra di Dar Khalsa, con il punteggio di 7 a 0, e la seconda contro il Moshi Khalsa, con un punteggio di 8 a 0. Oltre il risultato, che già si sa quando giochi contro i maschi come andrà a finire, l’importante è che la squadra ha giocato bene e il gruppo composto da un mix di giovani e “vecchie” si è sperimentato sul campo per la prima volta.

From last year, the current team has 6 new players within: Nuru, Zuena, Flora, Pendo, Beby and Betty, all coming from the Magereza, an area at South of Dar Es Salaam nearby the Prisons, where we are training now with the team, getting more new young girls interested in playing hockey.The first match we played against Dar Khalsa, losing 8-0, and the second against Moshi Khalsa, losing 8-0. Besides the results (you already know how is going to end when you play against men…) the most important thing is that the new group mix of young and “old” players, played well and put effort in the matches. For many of them was the first time ever to play a match!!!

Oggi  30 marzo ci saranno le finali di campionato, dove giocheranno le squadre che hanno passato i gironi. Ecco le squadre che hanno partecipato al campionato: TPDF, Dar Khalsa, Moshi Khalsa, Magereza, Dar Es Salaam Institute, Tanzania Hockey Ladies TWENDE.

Hockey Project Tanzania 2014: Hockey for Development!

Eccoci di nuovo qui. Dopo Kampala, dove abbiamo partecipato con la prima squadra di club femminile della Tanzania, “Hockey CLub Twende” all’ “Africa Cup for Club Champions” classificandoci cinque; abbiamo fatto una pausa di quasi due mesi.

In questo periodo abbiamo lavorato per la programmazione del progetto “Hockey Tanzania 2014”. Il progetto avrà il patrocinio del COPE e di Tulime, che hanno deciso di sostenere il progetto concedendomi anche di utilizzare parte del mio tempo lavorativo per dedicarmi a all’hockey. L’obiettivo è quello di diffondere l’hockey nelle scuole, di far giocare bambini e ragazzini di Dar, di far conoscere il nostro sport ai più giovani. Scuole primarie, scuole secondarie (internazionali e statali) e l’università sono già stati contattati e a maggio inizieremo con le lezioni. Nel frattempo, gli allenamenti della scuola femminile sono riniziati, con molte novità. Alcune giocatrici “vecchie” hanno momentaneamente sospeso gli allenamenti per poter seguire le loro piccole attività economiche con le quali si sostengono (hanno iniziato piccole attività di commercio per sostenere la famiglia tipo intrecciare i capelli, vendere le patatine fritte per strada, cucire etc..). Nel frattempo sono arrivate alcune ragazze nuove, giovani, che stanno imparando a giocare a hockey. Molte di loro abitano a Magereza, una zona a Sud di Dar che per raggiungere devo attraversare tutta la città mettendoci anche due ore di dala dala. Per cui adesso gli allenamenti si sono spostati qui, dove c’è un campo di terra battuta, tre volte alla settimana sempre al mattino presto.

Nel frattempo è iniziata la produzione dei primi bastoni prodotti in loco, da artigiani locali, che serviranno per le prime attività nelle scuole… Ecco il prototipo del primo bastone, realizzato dal “fundi” (artigiano in swahili) Masudi nel  suo laboratorio a Mwenge, Dar.

Il legno utilizzato è il “Mlingoti”, che tra i vari tipi utlizzati si è dimostrato quello più solido, l’ho usato in un paio di allenamenti e ha resistito! Per adesso ne fabbrichiamo un piccolo stock, in attesa di iniziare la produzione dei bastoni in carcere (vedi sezione “projects”), uno degli obiettivi del progetto hockey tanzania 2014. Ogni bastone ha un costo che si aggira sugli 7/8 euro per la produzione e poi verranno utilizzati per insegnare hockey ai bambini e ragazzini nelle scuole.

Saranno le ragazze stesse della squadra, soprattutto quelle che non hanno un lavoro fisso ma vivono di piccole attività commerciali di sussistenza, che diventeranno le “walimu wa hockey”, insegnati di hockey, e a turno andranno a insegnare hockey nelle scuole; ricevendo un piccolo compenso che possa aiutarle nella loro vita di tutti i giorni.

Sono tante attività, gli obiettivi sono molti e i sogni pure, piano piano cerchiamo di concretizzarli. Noi da qui ci siamo, quello che abbiamo fatto e faremo, è grazie al contributo di chi ha creduto e continua a credere in questo progetto.

Leggendo adesso questo articolo che è uscito un mesetto fa su il Daily News, uno dei principali giornali nazionali, l’emozione è tanta, sapendo il lavoro che c’è stato dietro. Meno un anno fa, non esisteva nessuna squadra femminile in Tanzania, oggi la nazionale femminile compare per la prima volta nel Ranking Mondiale, al 46° posto.

E dà forza per andare avanti, tra mille sfide.

We’re back! After Kampala, we took a break of almost two months after representing Tanzania with Hockey Club Twende, the first female team in the country, at the Africa Cup for Club Championship.

During this break we worked on planning the Hockey Tanzania project for 2014. The project will be under patronage of Cope and Tulime, they decided to support it, and the project is now integral part of my working duties. Our goal is to spread hockey into schools, have young kids in Dar playing the game, and gain recognition for the sport among youngsters. Primary and secondary schools (public and international ones) and the University have already been contacted, and hockey lessons will start in May. In the meantime women team got back to practice, with some fresh new entries. Some “veteran” players temporarily suspended practices to go back to their small economic activities in order to make a living (commercial activities to support the family like hair making, food selling, needlecraft, etc..). new girls and kids came by, willing to play. Most of them live in Magereza, south side of Dar es Salaam so I reach them by daladala travelling for a couple of hours while crossing the city. Practices takes place here for the moment, three times a week always very early in the morning.

Local production of wooden hockey sticks has also started with Tanzanian carpenters, these equipment will serve for activities in the schools… first prototype has been realized by “fundi” (carpenter) Masudi, in his laboratory in Mwenge, Dar es Salaam. Wood used is called “Mlingoti”, that showed to be the more resistant among the ones that have been tried; I used it for a couple of training and it’s doing its job so far! We’re manufacturing just a small stock at the moment, waiting to start production in the prison (see section “projects” of this website), as one of the projects for 2014. Each stick cost around 7/8 Euros for production, and will be used to tech the game to kids in the schools.

Women from the senior team will become “walimu wa hockey”, or hockey teachers, especially the ones without job, so that they’ll receive some pocket money for this activity that will help them to make a living.

There are a lot of activities, a lot of goals and dreams too, slowly we’ll try to achieve them one by one. We’re here and we’re committed, everything that we achieved and that will be achieved will be done thanks to all the people that believed and believes in this whole project.

Reading now this recent article on the Daily News, one of the top selling national newspaper, fills us with emotion, knowing all the work that had to be done to get where we’re now. Less than a year ago no women team existed in the country, today Tanzania women national team appears for the first time in the World ranking at number 46^th.

This encourages us to go on despite many challenges and obstacles.
