RUN TO KENYA..AGAIN! LE NUOVE DATE DELL’AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS!

18-24 novembre 2013, Nairobi

A settembre, in seguito agli attacchi terroristici avvenuti a Nairobi nel centro commercial di Westgate, dove molte persone hanno perso la vita e alter sono state ferite, la Federazione Internazionale di Hockey aveva deciso di annullare l’Africa Cup of Nation, in programma dal 26 di settembre fino al 5 di ottobre. La notizia è arrivata pochi giorni prima dell’inizio del torneo, quando noi già eravamo a Nairobi da un paio di giorni e avevamo iniziato a fare allenamento per abituarci al nuovo campo in erba sintattica, che le ragazze non avevano mai visto né provato a giocarci sopra. Così, dopo lo stupore della notizia e il disappunto di tutta la squadra, siamo tornati a Dar in attesa si sapere quando il torneo si sarebbe giocato di nuovo. Il ritorno è stato complicato, il morale ha risentito di questo evento, le ragazze hanno iniziato ad accusare la stanchezza, e non solo loro. Tutta la tensione è calata, riprendere gli allenamenti non è stato semplice, non tutte sono ritornate al campo subito, riprendere il ritmo, ritrovare la motivazione, dentro di me e trasmetterla alle ragazze, rimettere in piedi un obiettivo, senza sapere di preciso il limite temporale dell’inizio del torneo(a un certo punto ho avuto la paura che il torneo non si sarebbe giocato)… non è stato facile. Adesso la squadra è al completo, si sono aggiunte anche un paio di ragazze nuove, che stanno imparando a giocare e presto inizieranno a fare gli allenamenti con le altre … La settimana scorsa finalmente sono uscite le nuove date del torneo a Nairobi, che sarà dal 18 al 24 di novembre.

La partenza per Nairobi l’abbiamo fissata per il 13, di modo da poter fare ancora qualche allenamento e una o due partite amichevoli prima dell’inizio del torneo. Dopo il periodo un po’ difficile al ritorno da Nairobi, adesso il morale è di nuovo alto, la scorsa settimana abbiamo avuto un paio di giorni di festa in occasione di una grossa festività islamica. Visto che metà squadra è musulmana è cristiana e metà musulmana, rispettiamo tutte le religioni e quindi gli allenamenti sono saltati per permettere alle ragazze di festeggiare. Questo è da dire, in questa squadra musulmani e cristiani convivono assieme benissimo, e ognuno ha il diritto di manifestare apertamente il suo credo. Prima di iniziare ogni partita, le ragazze pregano in gruppo, e a turno si prega un dio diverso. A questo punto, non ci rimane che affidarci nelle mani di Dio e di Allah, che si organizzino loro due per farci arrivare a Nairobi tutti sani e salvi, e che il torneo si giochi senza nessun’altra catastrofe e che, soprattutto, le ragazze si divertano e possano apprendere il più possibile da questa esperienza. E se magari ci fanno arrivare ancora un po’ di soldini, sarebbe perfetto!

RUN TO KENYA..THE NEW DATES AFTER THE TERRORIST ATTACK IN NAIROBI

In September, while we were in Nairobi ti play the Africa CUp of Nation of hockey, which was supposed to be hold from the 26th of September to the 5th of October, something that we didn’t espect happened. An attack carried on by an Al-Quaeda affiliated fondamentalist group of terrorists at the Westgate Mall, a shopping centre nearby the city centre of Nairobi. Many people died and many have been wounded during the attack. The city wasn’t safe, wasn’t allowed to go out. The first day the arrived in Nairobi, we stayed in the hotel and we couldn’t go to have training at the hockey field, as we planned. We kept to look through the local television the update of the event that was happening meanwhile at the Westgate. After the first day, we got the authioorization from the Kenya Hockey Association to train. But after two days, we suddenly got a phone call from the Africa Hockey Association “the tournament is postponed due to the tough situation that occured and lack of safety in the city. You have to go back to Dar, we will let you know when the tournament will be played again.”

The emotion I felt in that moment is hard to explain, suddenly it was like if all the work and the effort we had done to come to Nairobi, all the trainings, the effort to find money etc… was collapsed. We were there, ready to start to play, the team was entusiastic and willing to play. When I told to the girls the bad news, the first thing the ask was “would we come back again in nairobi? Where we will find the money again to come?” I felt in that moment that I couldn’t gave up, that WE couldn’t go back to Dar without try again to come to play the Africa Cup of Nation. “Yes we will come back to Nairobi, I’m committed to this our dream, and I will do everything I can to continue. We don’t have to give up now, if we give up now, it would be like we hadn’t done anything.”

So we went back to Dar and after few days of rest, we conitnued to train every morning from 6 to 9 am. It wasn’t easy to go on, at first the girls and myself as well, were tired. But pole pole the morale increased againg and we found again the right motivation.

Finally the Africa Hockey Association published the new dates of the tournament. It will be played from the 18th to the 24th of november. Always in Nairobi. The departure is fixed on the 13th of November.

In the team there are cristian and muslim players, and everyone has the right to express her own religion: before any match starts, we pray God. Sometimes we pray Jesus, sometimes we pray Allah. It doesn’t matter who is, the important thing is that HE protects us and wil help us to go and come back safely from Nairobi. And if help us also to find some money to support the team, even better!
